In Conversation with Laurie King

November’s ReWild Yourself Champion is the wonderful writer, author and Wilderness Therapeutic Practitioner from the UK, Laurie King

Laurie has had a busy year, finishing her PHD (on the intersection between foraging and conservation), training as a rites of passage guide, running wilderness retreats and workshops, and relocating to the Inner Hebrides in Scotland to be closer to Nature and the land.  So we were delighted to grab an hour in her  company for a lovely chat.

We discussed the inspiration behind her Wilder Journeys book, what makes a wilderness retreat so special, Laurie’s own practice of Nature connection, and what brought her to a remote island off the West Coast of Scotland!

There is plenty to digest, so you can either check out the clips below, or watch the entire interview on Laurie’s  ReWild Yourself Champion Profile where there is also other related content you might enjoy.

Laurie’s Connection to Nature

Laurie explains how camping and hiking as a teenager was her gateway to connecting with Nature, why ferns are such wonderful teachers, and how the mythical Selkie story is a powerful meditation on female autonomy and acceptance. Laurie also shares some of her own tips on connecting with Nature and the eternal value of a long walk!

Wild Well Beings, bushcraft and foraging

Laurie talks us through the Wild Well Being workshops she runs with friend and colleague Naomi and the powerful process of intention setting and use of systemic constellations. Laurie also explains her own interest in bushcraft and foraging, the confidence it fosters, and how others can best learn these nourishing and very useful survival skills.

Wilder Journeys

Wilder Journeys is a collection of non-fiction stories and poems on the human connection with Nature, collected from an extraordinary set of adventurers, nomads and Nature lovers who have had profound experiences in nature. Laurie talks us through how the book came into existence, working with author Miriam Lancewood, as well as possible plans for Wilder Journeys 2.0!
