In Conversation with Kai Njeri

August’s ReWild Yourself Champion is Kai Njeri, the multitalented,  ‘regenerative systems thinker’ based in Tanga, Tanzania

Kai is full of wisdom and poetry. She is a kind and generous spirit, driven by a desire to help her human and non-human kin, and emphasising the connections and interdependencies between the two.  Kai believes that our own health and happiness comes through a connection with the land and Nature and a care and custodianship of it.

She embodies so much of what ReWild Yourself is about and our conversation with her earlier this month was full of honesty, personal insight and stories, and considered reflections on how a regenerative approach can improve our own lives, our communities, and the natural environments we live in.

During our conversation, Kai explains her regenerative culture approach, the importance of  rethinking our food and education systems, and her take unique take on seed sovereignty. She also shares some useful insight and tips on writing poetry and how to improve your own connection with Nature.

We know you’ll enjoy this one, so check out the clips below, or you can watch the entire interview on Kai’s ReWild Yourself Champion Profile, where there are also other related content you might enjoy.

Kai’s Connection to Nature

Kai shares with us special memories in Nature, including a heartwarming moment with her young son and details of the place in Nature she is happiest of all.  For our non-African readers/viewers, google Baobab tree, then enjoy Kai’s wonderful description of the affinity she feels with this majestic species.

Kai Njeri on Regenerative Systems

Regenerative systems mimic natural process, trying to work and learn from Nature, rather than exploiting or extracting from it. This idea is foundational to all that Kai does and in this clip she does a wonderful job of explaining exactly what a regenerative culture is, how the various strands of her work are all connected under this, and her own personal journey to this approach.

Poetry and an emotional connection to Nature

Kai is a wonderful poet. Her work is incredibly evocative and explores her own emotional connection with Nature and the world around her.  As well as sharing her own process, Kai kindly offered us some useful writing tips, as well as suggestions on how people can explore their own emotional connection with Nature.
